arose on the 3rd day triumphant over death and that the only way to be saved is for us to believe this good news, repent and trust in what God did in Christ at Calvary to redeem us?

Apologies if that sentence is too short to encapsulate all the nuances of the gospel. Yahoo has its limits! I just want to see the extent of Christian unity on this core issue. Orthodox, R.Cs, Pentecostals, Anglicans, Evangelicals of every hue - come on and identify your group, please! I'm in the Reformed Presbyterian one.

This is NOT a Q about differences re. the finer points of the gospel but is about the extent of our unity on this essential doctrine. It's also NOT inclusive of what believers must do AFTER they've turned to Christ and away from their sin. I'm not looking for identifying marks of a Christian. This is NOT about denominational distinctives. So, do you agree this is the gospel, and if so (or not) what's your denomination?

This is intriguing! I can sense almost everyone willing themselves to bend over backwards to agree on this, but some folks just can't quite do it! That 'little' point about faith alone is just too much for some. Yet amongst the Catholics there is a difference of opinion. Some agree, full stop. Others castigate Sola Fide as, well, unChristian. It might be worth mentioning that pseudo-Christian groups, like the Jehovah's Witnesses, cannot abide Sola Fide either. There's something about putting the full stop immediately after 'faith alone', isn't there?

Plato asked an excellent question but it goes beyond the strict scope of this matter, so how about posting it yourself as a question?

And could James O explain how 'grace' is a work? That's got me baffled!

I'll keep this open a little longer...

Catholicism teaches this but believing in the Good News also takes in those who do not know the 'outer form' of the gospel or "anonomous Christians"
and so do all truly Trinitarian Christians believe in the Incarnation of God in Christ, the Saving death and resurrection of Christ.
Jesus is the only offering for salvation but only God can judge the reality of grace in anothers life
"I am the Way, the Truth and the Life"
Faith without the works of grace and love is dead

once you examine heavily, Jesus did not ever say the crucifixion develop into his meant capacity of redeeming mankind. The Apostles have been at a loss as to the thank you to act after the crucifixion, which had by no capacity been on the tables. they had by no capacity been arranged for it and Jesus wasn't arranged for it the two, yet he'd carried out his artwork as a physically powerful rabbi, and unfold lots of excellent suggestions, some taken from sects, others from Greek philosophy, others from issues he'd learnt in Alexandria and perhaps in the ineffective Sea communities. After Jesus it wasn't lots "how can we understand what Jesus taught" as "how can we make the disappearance of this prophet smart and tie all of it up right into a logical, new faith". Arguments approximately what Jesus's visual charm and disappearance have been meant to intend went on for hundreds of years. In some years' time we are going to have the e book of the newly got here across Judas' Gospel. which will positioned some cats between the pigeons. permit's wish we get the unadulterated version and not Benedict sixteen's version.

Everything you say is right and AMEN to that.

Except where you say all it takes is faith to be saved. That is a Protestant doctrine which was introduced in the 1500's and it is not biblical.

None of the early Christians believed this novel doctrine. Rather Jesus Christ, the Apostles and all Christians until the Reformation believed faith and works go hand in hand.

Jesus was sinless, Hebrews 4:15. This should be a doctrine of Christianity and not limited by denominational differences.

I agree that you summed up the Gospel very well except for saying that salvation is by faith alone. Martin Luther introduced this idea and it is not found in the Scriptures.

But I am glad Christians can believe on essentials like

1. The Trinity
2. Christ as God and Man and Savior

I agree to a point with what you call this "essential doctrine."

Here's the phrase I take issue with: "the only way to be saved is for us to believe this good news, repent and trust in what God did in Christ at Calvary to redeem us."

You are basically describing Sola Fide or "faith alone" and this is an unbiblical, manmade doctrine.

The constant teaching of the true Church for the past 2000 years has been that we are saved by grace, through faith and works by the mercy of God.

Does anyone ever read the entire question first before spouting off?

Yes. This is the core, essential Christian doctrine; one must believe that this is true.

I am Catholic.

All Protestant denoms agree with this. Catholic and Eastern Orthodox do not, because they say that Jesus' sacrifice was inadequate, and must be 'topped up'. This is achieved only by regular attendance at their temples and eating Jesus' body and drinking his blood. It is an attempt to patent air.

Christ is our savior - agreed!

We can do nothing without Him.

However the Bible says "You see that a man is justified by works and NOT by faith alone" James 2:24

I am Catholic. God bless you.
