Both cameras are digital.

Unfortunately, you are comparing apples to oranges. Your decision should be based on what you plan to do with your photography.

Are you interested in shooting sports? Are you interested in macro photography? Are you interested in studio work, both portraiture and still life? Are you interested in wedding photography? Are you interested in just getting good photos of family and friends? Are you interested in landscape photography? Are you interested in nature photography?

These are questions only you can answer. How you answer them will help you decide on which camera will best suit your needs.

The Sony is a fixed-lens digicam with few (if any) options for future growth.

The Nikon is an interchangeable lens Single Lens Reflex. You view your scene through the actual lens on the camera. You can change lenses to suit different shooting requirements and use external flash units which makes it extremely versatile and capable of "growing" with you as you explore photography.

I would go with the sony dsc-h9, I have the dsc-h7 and wished i had waited for the h9 because the h9 has a total darkness feature without flash and you can swive the screen lcd view finder around and take low angle shots and ya know when your in a crowd and want to get a pic so you put the camera over your head you can do that with the h9 , this was my first purchase of a digital camera the h7 and it is fan tastic ,also get an extra battery pack they are handy especially when you forget to charge the battery.if you want to see what kind of pics it takes go to www.flickr.com and type in thanks to ts noel just a few pics that i have taken . also the camera has an extra zoom feature on it after you have taken the picture and brings the picture up 5 times even closer. durable to i have dropped mine about 10 times didnt do any thing but scratch the body hope this helped

I'd go for Nikon D40. You can take your pictures to another level with DSLR. Furthermore, a DSLR gives you better control over your camera (you can get what you want - or maybe better).

You can also use many kinds of lens (just change the lens and you're ready to shoot!). Macro, telephoto, wide angle, fisheye; these lenses give interesting twist on your photos.

I think that if you really see photography as a serious hobby, and you have the time to learn, then go for the D40 dslr...it will give you more room to grow and will still be great when you've moved up to the intermediate level!
