I am a university student and i will be going to India for a marketing internship and I will be working in an Art Gallery. I do not have any experience or basic background in paintings, sculpture etc... I am looking to read up before I go there. At least something that will give me a basic knowledge on art, type of art, history etc....
I would really appreciate the help! Thank you!!

Gardners Art Through the Ages is the focus book that most professors use for the Art History 200 series. It will give you a very broad overview of genera's, styles, time periods, cultural art, etc.

Try your college cook store or a used book store to buy one. Its expensive and weighs like 8 lbs or so.

I have a BA in Art History - this is what we used in the beginner classes.

I hope you like big books.

"The" book to read is:
History of Art
by Anthony F. Janson
http://www.amazon.com/History-Art-Anthony-F-Janson/dp/0131828959

It covers the complete history in a very readable way. It does not cover the most modern art but is very thorough about everything (and I mean everything) else.

Must have (read) for every art lover/dealer/maker.
