I'm a guy but I'll answer your question, women want men to be the pursuer, they want to be noticed and appreciated for who they are fundamentally. Women want to know they mean something to you and will sometimes act standoffish because they want you to take initiative by starting conversation, asking them out, reassuring them that you love them or a number of different things. Some women want guys to do all the work like a "knight in shining armor" rescuing her as a princess from her castle...personally I think that view is unrealistic but that happens to be one reason why the idea of a girl being a princess is popular...knowing when a girl wants you to "chase" her and when a girl is telling you "turn around a go back where you came from" takes being able to read non-verbal skills. Most women are very good at it because they communicate that way alot, indirectly, as in some things are just "understood" most of the time guys don't understand and the woman think the guy is an idiot because to her what she want or doesn't want to obvious, to make it easier if a girl trys to play hard to get but still gives an indication of flirting with you she probably likes you but wants you to be the man and say you like her first, she's just trying to drop a not so subtle hint

They mean they are lazy, but not honest enough to admit they are lazy. So they invent the pretense of being 'chased'.
Men have to do all the work in a relationship, all the time.
