While making the bed just now i snapped my long nail. It is bleeding and sore. I have wrapped tissue round to stop the bleeding but i don`t know whether to cover it and hope for the best or cut off the broken part. It is ripped a long way down.

You don't need to go to the ER or the Doctors or call medical help. Don't waste their time with something like that. Not saying it doesnt hurt but its nothing life threating or like your going to loose a limb. like the intellegent people that said apply pressure and clean it and just cut the nail, do it. then just clean it everyday and night and let it air out at night with out a band-aid or bandage.

Cut off as much as you can without exposing anything that should not be exposed.

Running cold water over something can help clean it and help stop the bleeding. Putting pressure on it with a towel wrapped around it will also help stop the bleeding.

Make sure it is cleaned and once the bleeding has stopped, put a couple of bandaids (so it is completely covered, with mild pressure, and secure where the bandaids won't fall off easily) and some antibiotic ointment.

Hope that helps!

When the bleeding has stopped you will be able to see the damage, try cold then warm pressure to help with the pain. If it looks bad then go to the doctor.
That must really hurt EJ and it must have been a big shock. If you go to the Dr then have a nice hot sweet tea. If you decide to trim it and cover it and not go to the Dr then have a large brandy!
I'm not taking the mick, I hope the pain will die down soon and your nail is OK.

You need to cut the nail down. You are going to loose it down as far as it's cracked, so cut it short and bind it till it no longer bleeds easily. after that, all out can really do is keep it clean and covered with elasto=plasts until the break grows past your finger.

I know it hurts love. I hope you feel better soon.

Cut the nail down and apply firm pressure for 15 minutes to stop the bleeding, then apply a plaster.

Cut it off as far down as you can and stick a plaster over the end of your finger and another round it. It will throb for a while but the plasters will stop the bleeding and stop you from catching it on anything else.

You are probably referring to an toenail impact injury. Where the nail isn't in contact with the nail bed anymore.

If this is the case, you should definetly go see a doctor. If you don't the nail could keep growing into your toe...resulting in a painful situation that will require surgery.

If it looks hardcore, go see a doctor. DO NOT remove the nail. It is there to guide the new nail that will grow. If you remove it the new nail will have no point of reference and grow all weirded out, which is bad.

I know this from having an impact injury on my big toe from playing soccer.

Personally, I would cut off as much as possible without doing further damage, and then cover it up to avoid further injury. That way, it can grow out a little more and you may be able to cut off the rest without it hurting.

Trim it short, then apply a plaster, firmly, but not too tight. keep it bandaged up till the remaining broken part grows out.

I sympathise, it is sore when you rip a nail. Ouch!
