Is this muslim tradition or something?

We don't do this anymore. We used to do this before we built all of our FOBs and put in life support. Now we have abolution units on our FOBs. They have regular western style toilets and showers. The waste water is pumped out and taken away in trucks.

We used to do it because it was one of the only ways to get rid of the waste in a field environment. Field sanitation is very important to keep our Soldiers healthy and stop the spread of associated diseases.

It is not an Arab or Muslim custom.

Um.....Where are they gonna get plumbing from at a remote army base??

They can't just build new pipes, pump in new water, add new sewers and treatment plants for the sewerage and water wherever they set up camp.

This is obvious to me and I know f all about the army.

Oh, and they burn it because this turns it into ash and also kills any germs. What else would you do with it, just leave it there?

Burning it and placing it in fuel would kill bacteria and parasites. I'm not certain but its possible that both the fuel and heat are in themselves antibacterials. Possibly the buckets are used as makeshift "outhouses".

Also human waste attracts pests such as flies. Pests can spread bacteria and parasites.

I'm guessing this is a reference to the movie Jarhead.

The American Soldiers were doing the excact same thing. Sometimes there might not even be a bucket... If plumbing isn't available you still need to get rid of the excrement that people leave behind. (It sucks)

I am sorry but you don't win anything with this question. All soldiers have toilet paper issued and a big UPS box. They are saving up enough of that to send you a life time supply.
