"The words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and tenement halls".. From "The Sound Of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel

The Sound Of Silence (3:08)
P. Simon, 1964
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

I'm not quite sure what your question is here.
If you want to know where the prophets wrote the books, they were written at wherever they happened to be.
For example, Moses wrote the first 5 books, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy in the Wilderness and Plains of Moab from 1513 to 1473 BCE
Joshua wrote Joshua in 1450 in Canaan
Judges, Ruth and 1 Samuel were written by Samuel in Isreal from 1100 to 1078.
Isaiah wrote his book in Jerusalem c 1020
Jeremiah in Judah 732
Lamentations by Jeremiah Nr Jerusalem in 607
Ezekiel in Babylon c 591
Daniel in Babylon c 536
Hosea in Samaria 745
Joel in Judah c 820
Amos in Judah c 804
Micah in Judah 717
Naham in Judah c 628
Ha bakkuk in Juda
Zephaniah in Judah 638
Zechariah in Jerus;alem 518
Haggai in Jerusalem 520
Malachi in Jerusalem 443.

Mat 2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

Mat 2:18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

just wondering, who the f-c- is jeremy? new testament has all kinds of scriptures saying "Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by X the prophet," but there is NO documentation of X the prophet anywhere to even validate he was a real person, let alone a prophet.

The words and the names of the prophets were written in the related holy books e.g Zabur,Torakh,Bible and Qur'an and also in the hadith (explanation given by Muhammad pbuh for its imp-lementation).There is a book written by a sholar about the history of 25 prophets. We called nabi or prophet who brought the holy book and we called rasul for messenger of Allah the only one God.Prophets were humans who appointed by God to be a messenger and given the holy book as a life guide for his followers.

I think he is just trying to say that people are worshiping money now instead of "god".. They go to flashy places of worship, and bow down to "neon" signs (which represents, technology, etc).

And you can find prophets in subways and tenement halls, (the working poor or even the homeless). People who don't bow down to money, (mainly because they don't have any). But they are most likely to display a true faith in the real "god"...

But that's just my take.
