With both in their prime, Ali definitely. His punch time was recorded at 33% faster than the average heavyweight. He had an amazing ability to withstand a punch (even from the strongest heavyweights), and he outweighed Robinson by 50 pounds or more: he was a heavyweight; Robinson was a lightweight.

If Sugar Ray Robinson would have been about 50 lbs heavier, I'd given him a very good chance against Ali. He once tried to take the Light Heavyweight championship from Joey Maxim and failed. This match could never happen.

Robby was Muhammad Ali's childhood hero, and I think this would play on Ali's mind. With this in mind, any dream fight with Robinson would just be a sparring session, IMO. Ali was also naturally bigger by a long way, and would take it easy and comfortbaly box his way to a unanimous 15 round decision, in pretty much the same way that SRR was content to comfortably outbox (without hurting) Henry Armstrong (who, incidentally, was Sugar Ray Robinson's childhood hero. Sugar Ray only took the fight cos Hank needed the money.)

Your question is not valid unless you specify a weight class. They are too far apart for any logical weight division. I suppose the only one that suggests itself would be cruiserweight, 200 lbs. Ali could have reached that without too much drastic strain. Robinson would not have gone up that far, but would narrow the gap some. Still, even a water-drained Ali would have been too much for Robinson, who would show great skill but ultimately suffer a late-round KO.

Ali easy. Robinson was once asked why he didn't try to go up and fight smallish heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. Robinson replied, "Are you guys trying to get me killed!"

Ali. Bigger. You're basically talking about a great middleweight vs. a great heavyweight.
