We have a 7-8 month old Husky. We have been informed by our vet and family friends that it is around the time where she will be getting her first 'period'. I would like to know what are the signs to show this.

Today, she hasn't been all enthusiastic as she is usually very cheeky and would jump onto dinner table and jump on family members, however today she was sitting near the dinner table and have lied around us and being very quiet.

Today, while she was having her no.2's, she was howling very loudly.

She is also licking her vaginal (or how should I describe it? Sorry) part more frequently today.

Is this signs that she is going to have her first period very soon? (Today/tomorrow?).

What should we do about it? Should we still play with her and let her inside the house or leave her outside for the time being? If so, how long?

Thank you!

First of all, howling during bowel movements and being lethargic IS NOT a symptom of being in heat (aka estrous).
THEY MAY BE SYMPTOMS OF A SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION... CONTACT YOUR VET ASAP!

Unspayed females go into heat every 6 months. They will 'spot' a clear, amber fluid the first week, perhaps blood the second week, and clear amber the third . They may act completely normal or may become overly affectionate or restless. Sometimes they may 'flag' another dog (or family member)... holding their tail to one side, exposing themself. Unlike human females who may seriously restrict their activities during 'that time of month', dogs usually continue normal activities.

DO NOT leave her out in the yard unattended... the smell of estrous can travel over 1/2 mile and will draw male dogs... the last thing you need is a littler of puppies!

Please consider having her spayed... it will eliminate a lot of headaches, including cutting her chances of certain cancers. But by all means, contact your vet and discuss her symptoms.

BTW, if she is spotting heavily, youu can put a pair of men's underwear on her (stick her tail out of the opening) with a pad. A commercial version is available at per stores.

It is called her first "heat". After the licking stage she will bleed from the vagina. You will need to buy pads and a panty for her if she is inside. If she is outside you will need to keep her locked up so other dogs (males) cannot get to her. Most males will not actually try to mate with her till the end of it(2 weeks or so from now) the bloody flow will actually look almost black and be very little. Until then they will just be very excited around her. Females can go back into "heat very soon or may wait for several months for the 2nd heat. Most do not advise breeding with the first or second heat.Treat her just like you normally would but kind of baby her.

Do NOT leave her outside unattended!

Its possible she may be coming into heat soon.. if her vulva is swollen, that is a good indication that she is coming in, or already in heat. Females will have a bloody discharge during their heat cycle too.. some bleed more than others. Small dogs, you may not even notice the blood because they bleed so little.

She will be attracting males.. as she will soon be fertile and willing. She is far too young to breed tho.. think of a 14 year old human having babies!

Her vulva will swell and there will be a bit of blood. If she is licking herself often it may be hard to tell, but try getting a piece of TP and dab it to see if there is any tint of red. Thier heats can be messy, but they actually make "diapers" for dogs who have "periods" as you put it!

They dot blood -small amount.
But the sure way to tell is to get here around other dogs. The male dogs will sniff her and try to mount her.
