Very good question. At first we were ordered by regulation to fly commercial in "Class A" uniforms, those with a tie and a jacket. Then as the Vietnam war progressed the order was changed to when flying commercial to go in civilian clothes. The reasons were the attacks at airports. We were spit on, things were thrown at us, we were called baby killers, and a whole lot of other things were done. The American public turned against the Vietnam war and took it out on the American Military. They would complain about Congress and say it was wrong, but they would reelect the same members every time. The Military was doing its job as well as it could. In 1969 I think a PFC made about $150 a month to risk his life in a jungle half way around the world. What still irks me is the fact that Vietnam was the only war in history were one side won every battle and lost the war. We through away 50,000+ lives at the negotiation table.

As usual, you are all messed up. The U.S Soldiers returning from Vietnam were usually in uniform on a chartered civilian or military flight. Any American traveling alone may have been told to wear civilian attire but usually because of Op-Sec. reasons. In the 60's just as it is today, the sissy Liberal trash didn't have anything better to do but to demonstrate against the war and harass or returning soldiers. Somewhere along the lines between the 60's and now, today's Liberal trash learned that its not our Soldiers that make policy, it's the politicians. Usually the same damn politicians they have a hand in electing I might add. So while most Libbies still demonstrate the war, they HAVE learned not to spit on or blame our awesome troops for the war. (And THAT ladies and gents is as CLOSE to a compliment that I can come up with for Liberals!)

Do you have some evidence that Vietnam military members were told to change into their civilian clothes when they entered the USA?

Absolutely not. Vietnam was the start of the media fed war and, like now, they only brought home the news of the bad things our military men and women did. They were told to wear civilian clothes because of all their brothers and sisters who had come home before them to mobs of people spitting and throwing garbage on them.
