How would you suggest a jump in career to Photography. Is "interest" enough?
If you are in it already.. What did you do to start?
How would you go about initiating the career jump... take it that you have not had ANY formal training.

1. Buy a copy of Photographer's Market 2007. It's a book that lists every known way to make money as a freelance photographer. Amazon has it.

2. Find a college with a photography or photojournalism course. Talk to the guidance counselor and the head of department. Ask to talk to some graduates who have found jobs.

3. There are very few photography jobs which pay a weekly wage. Make sure you have the skills to run your own business.

4. Consider not completely abandoning whatever career you're in.

5. Photography is art. Art is fueled by passion and obsession. Make sure you have the right fuel in you.

Go to Sears, Walmart, Picture People or Lifetouch, etc to get a job and some training. They basically hire sales people and teach them to shoot. You will be taught some great commercial basics and posing. The training would cost years and big bucks if you went to school for it. Many people do this and stall at that point, a few push on to learn more and become real photographers. It is a great training ground, though.

I went back to school at my local community college. I've had classroom as well as practical experience opportunities there. From there I got an internship at a local paper. Now I'm just starting my freelance photojournalism career. Community colleges are a relatively inexpensive option: yeah, they don't have the same prestige as other art schools, but you can gain practical, hands-on experience, as well as exploring different career options available to you. Good luck.

take hundreds if not thousands of pictures.
select your best pieces...at least a hundred of them
take them and show them to visual artists because they have an eye for artistic talent.
more times than not, they will have connections to magazines, newspapers, and other publications
