Contrary to popular belief pet rats are not nocturnal. Wild rats have a tendancy to be nocturnal as a measure of safety for their daily foraging. Pet Rats don't have the problem of being preyed upon and so they have adjusted their sleeping habits.

Pet Rats are crepuscular, this means they are asleep off and on throughout the day and night, being most active at dusk and dawn. Their domesticated sleeping pattern allows them to easily adjust to your schedule and it's also the reason why rats don't get cranky when you wake them up. They don't get into the same deep sleep that hamsters fall into during the day.

"my life has gone to the Rats"

My 5 little ratties sleep all day and party all night. Sometimes they get up in the day if they think I have a treat for them but usually they just lounge around snoozing. My mice are the same.
They all come out of their cages at night and play in our living room and go crazy jumping and running

Rats ARE NOT nocturnal.

They ARE crepuscular [ active at dawn and dusk, twilight]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crepuscular

We all tend to keep pet rats in rooms where lights are on, which messes with their natural rythms and can make them more active during the late evening/early part of the night. But go to a cage of well handled, tame, socialised pet rats and day or night theyll soon come a-runnin

Rodents are crepuscular meaning they sleep all day and are very lively at night. they'll often awaken interior the process the day to snack, bathe or drink water. additionally they desire low lighting fixtures and probably you save them in a community the place it is often vivid? attempt shifting them to a darker spot for the duration of the night and notice in the event that they wakeup :) good luck!
