So that if you don't hear the sirens or see the flashing lights you will (hopefully) see the word "AMBULANCE" in your rear view mirror, which reverses it so that you will see it "forward".

It is so that when you look through your rear view mirror, it will appear the correct way, and inform you an Ambulance is coming right behind you.

Because they believe that we arent retarted enough to recognize an ambulance by reading 'ambulance' on the bonnet between a big, shiny, loud, bright coloured van right in our rear view mirror.

it is so when the ambulance is going emergency the person in front of them (hopefully) knows to GET OUT OF THE FREAKING WAY, AND NOT SLAM ON THE BREAKS!!!!

because they can be read as ambulance cos of lateral inversion so they can be read correctly in rearview mirrors
