This often happens when dirt is stuck in the lens mechanism. If you live where you can visit a camera repair shop (look in the Yellow Pages) they might be able to clean it for you. If you can see anything around the moving parts, be very very careful if you try to brush it out with a soft brush so you don't jam it in worse. Likewise, if you use canned air you might force it in somewhere worse.

If you accidentally bumped the lens while it was open, this would also cause a focus error and it wouldn't retract.

Digital cameras are pretty delicate. Taking photos at the beach or desert can get all kinds of grit where it shouldn't be. Also, if you carry a camera in a purse or totebag without a camera case, this can get stuff in it.

If you bump the lens while it's open, the pieces of the lens assembly can get out of alignment and it will be stuck in its open position.

A lot of people who are used to having rugged old SLRs don't realize how much more delicate the digitals are.

Camera repair is not a "do it yourself" project.

It sounds as though you have abused your camera. If you've dropped it or bumped it then its probably in need of repair. Since repairs - at your expense - will cost more than the camera is worth, buy a new camera.

Learn to be more careful with your new camera. Buy a nice padded case to keep it in when you aren't using it. Use a wrist strap or neck strap when you are using it. Keep it away from dusty places like your backpack or purse.

this might not help...but try taking out the batteries and putting them back in....like starting your computer over...a restart!
