i think a specialist needs to diagnose this most deaf children develop alot later in walking and crawling and sitting so it may just be that they are so unbalanced.and wrongly diagnosed she would need to take tests on her muscles to see if it was hypertonia.

Good luck to your freind

From "Answers.com"; Hypertonia as was mentioned is a condition marked by an abnormal increase in tightness of the muscle tone & a reduced ability for the muscle to stretch (ie: an increased stiffness). It is generally accompanied by (increased) spasticity of the particular muscles.

On other sites hypertonia is said to be the most diagnosed symptom, especially in pediatrics. It also is mentioned in several articles that speak of cerebral palsy.

CP is not a diagnosis, but rather a description of different neurological/muscular symptoms. It is non-progressive and can cause difficulties in hearing.

1 cautionary note: It's important to talk to the MD treating the baby to not cause undo worrying.

I would also suggest getting a 2nd opinion.

My best to the baby & her parents.

In this world anything is possible.
Children are the most amazing and resilient creatures in the world. If anyone could fight back at this it would be a child. It sounds like your friend has a really tough little girl there, and if she has started crawling she is defying the odds. I am sure if she keeps pushing her way through she will eventually start walking.
I don't think that deafness is related, but I could be wrong. I am trying to find one of my books that has stories about hypertonia. When I find it I will message you and let you know.

We will keep her in our hearts!! I hate seeing kids with problems like this :(

Hypertonia, exceptionally high tension in the muscles. You would need to talk with the specialist some more. As for the deafness, I don;t know if it is connected.

It's an abnormal increase in the tightness of muscle tone and reduced ability for the muscle to stretch. Paratonia is a form of hypertonia, which is associated with dementia.

Are you sure you don't mean hypotonia? From the lack of strength, thats what it sounds like. Your friend's daughter should get early intervention to get her into physical and occupational therapy. She should also be evaluated and tested for genetic conditions that would have hypotonia as a symptom. I have heard sometimes it can be grown out of with a lot of therapy if it is not connected with any other genetic or other cause (benign hypotonia). The fact that she is crawling means she is building the mucles needed to walk.
