Just tell him that you think that he needs to be getting more rest for health's sake. Tell him that you think that you ad he should limit your phone call to a certain time at night (say 10PM) so that he can get more rest. Tell him that you are not angry, but worried about him.

Its very disconnected and frankly impersonal, but you could try chating online. Chance are he would stay awake cause he would have to answer back and even short answer require the effort to stay awake. If you intend on continuing talking on the phone keep your questions and answers short, let him try to control the conversation and when he has nothing to say,cut the conversation off. If there is nothing to be said, thats why he is falling asleep. Relationship conversations are about quality and not quantity, just because you are on the phone for a long time, doesnt mean anything. Communicate more efficiently, talk about what matters and talk about it often, small talk is dangerous when you are already tired and it is late.

This happened to me in a relationship as well. I would suggest trying to work out a day where you two can put aside work, homework, friends etc and really talk to eachother. Figure out a day when you can afford to put things aside. Otherwise if it keeps going in the pattern it is going now the relationship will slip and at the end of the day you two do not really know eachother. Communication is a big factor in making a relationship work and if you can not find the time to even talk on the phone it will be hard to press on with the relationship.
