Ok, I'm not a fan or a hater, I'm just looking at this statistically. All these reports are saying that JJ has the cup locked up.

The reports all say that he can lock it up with a 18th place finish or better. I don't know about you, but it doesn't seem that easy to just finish 18th...is it? Can you explain to me how a driver can be so assured of a better than 18th finish. Is it that unlikely that he could crash and not finish at all?

I don't really follow Nascar I was just curious how this worked.

For him it is fairly easy, also a freak accident could take him out yes. But people that are around him are going to be so afraid of racing him because they do not want to be the one that takes him out by mistake. So they will just let him do his thing. But an accident that happens before him and he gets envolved could stop it. But you also have to remember the poeple that are close to him would be running up in the top with him as well. So if he gets knocked out Gordan will probably be taken out as well which changes what spot he has to finish.

No, it won't be until the last few laps at Homestead. In 2004 Jimmie watched Kurt Busch ALMOST hit the retaining wall on pitroad but somehow he swerved to miss it when his tire flew off. If he had hit the wall or lost the tire like that out on the racetrack Jimmie would have won instead of losing the championship by 8 points. Anything can happen and it is NOT over quite yet. Jeff does have to get some help and even HE said that if they win it because of some misfortune to the 48 car that they really won't have earned it. You are correct, if Jeff leads the most laps AND wins at Homestead Jimmie will have to finish in 18th or better to clinch the championship.

So many points are given to the drivers on how they finish. Higher the driver finishes the more points he gets. Jimmie would have to have something bad to happen to him for him to be knocked off the top. So all he has to do this up comming weekend is stay out of trouble and finish 18th or better. Finishing 18th or lower would give him enough points to win the championship no matter who wins the race. Jeff Gordon could win the race and Jimmie could finish 18th. Johnson would stii get the title becaue he will have more points than Jeff,

Well the radio this morning was talking about the race and about Johnson. The views were mixed with most people thinking Hendrick organization is pulling something.
Some of the die hard Johnson fans are just saying he is the greatest driver. But some callers are saying it is just a show because of the fines and suspentions leveled to the team this year.
So has he locked it up the best bet is yes.Sure Jeff can catch him and pass him but the chances are slim since he Johnson is the hottest driver on the circut today.

I agree with you. How can you lock up a title already when you have to finish 18th and 43 cars start the race?. Anything can happen. Johnson could blow a tire, something could break, they could flat out miss the setup because he doesnt run well there or he could get caught up in someone else's mess. So i'll wait for him to finish 18th before i bow down and kiss his ring.

Well, didn't you see Jeff come into Victory lane with his white surrender flag...I'd say right now its totally Jimmie...Hey with HMS its easy to finish 18th or better, unless he has a major mulligan next weekend....Its a repeat for Jimmie Johnson..You need to follow Nascar, you would under stand that 18th is no problem for Chad (his crew chief) and Jimmie. They just have it 100% together..(I'm not fan either) But I've accepted it..

Yes it will be locked if he finishes 18 or better. And it is very easy for him to do. He's usually a top 5-10 guy but anything can happen. And if he DOES crash, he will be out : (
GO JIMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!

The short answer is he has to place 18th or better ONLY IF Jeff Gordon WINS and leads the most laps. There are two parts to the equation. If Jeff Gordon were to place 10th with no bonus points for leading Johnson would only have to place 32nd or so to win the championship.

It isn't that unlikely that he could crash, or something else could happen, but it is hard to foresee that kind of event, so it is left out of the equation. That (not having anything bad happen) is a matter of luck, and Johnson's team seems to have all of that for the moment.
