Everything in moderation. My dogs absolutely love ice cream. Whenever I eat it, which is not often, I give each of three one scoop each. Dogs can get obese easily so just be careful with how much you give.

Ice cream is not really good to give as it gives them diarrhea. All dogs...YES PEOPLE ALL DOGS are lactose intolerant after age 1. The lack the lactase enzyme they had when they were puppies. In small moderation you can give your dog ice cream like a small scoop BUT NO CHOCOLATE or ice containing CHOCOLATE...that is poison to a dog. If you REALLY want to give your dog ice cream do what I do. I give my dogs Frosty Paws as its specially made ice for dogs and you can get it any grocery store and/or pet store.

Dog can get diarrhea from milk products. The high fat content in Ice Cream can cause Pancreatitis in dogs. Try getting Frosty Paws, which are made for dogs.

Yes, and for two reasons. One, ice cream contains dairy which contains lactose. Dogs bodies (as well as humans) do not possess enough lactase, a chemical used to break down lactose. This can cause excessive diarrhea and stomach upset. Two, ice cream contains high amounts of sugar which can cause insulin release and lead to kidney failure. Sugar also leads to an increase in plaque and tartar build-up which can result in peritonitis disease.

Dairy is not good for dogs. Most dogs are lactose intolerant and it gives them loose stools. Dogs should only be given dog food or foods approved for feeding a raw diet. Giving them junk food is bad for their health. Their is ice cream for dogs called Frosty Paws, that would be better to give.

Ice cream is fine for dogs -- in moderation, of course! It's just as fattening for them as it is for us.

Only SOME dogs are lactose intolerant, not most. Ice cream does NOT automatically give dogs diarrhea. But if you notice that your dog has diarrhea after eating ice cream or drinking milk, don't give him anymore.

I think they make special 'dog ice cream' that might be lactose free. They sell it in pet stores.

My pup loves ice cream and frozen yogurt. If we are having a flavor that doesn't contain chocolate we give her a little scoop (maybe about 2 Tablespoons worth). Too much is bad in terms of sugar and fat... and too much also gives her the runs.

my lab loved ice cream and did not have any bad reaction to it. I haven't tried it on my Shih-tzu. I think her system is probably more delicate.

Sugar and milk, diarrhea and increasing the odds of developing diabetes. Does that sound good ?
