it depends on what area you are in, mine theres not much competition cause i shoot film and digi and the new kids just shoot digi and do photoshop
every person with a camera thinks of doing weddings and portraits and if they are technically strong and artistically inclined they might do okay out of it
it took me years of schooling and selling cameras before i went out into the market,
you need to be technically strong first, if you shoot crap people tend not to rehire you. you need to have a niche i believe, you need a strong business plan and business skills
its a up n down thing for me, some years great, this year quite flat - depends on your marketing alot
now i have been at it a while i find ive started selling a few images i made years ago, i have an outstanding agent in europe who markets my stuff over there, hes like gold to me
i did part time for a few years while i taught english in greece, did my army service, sold cameras and finally made the leap.........if its not your only source of income its alot easier
is it hard, to start off yes extremely - you are competing with seasoned pro's, wanna be pros, most new camera buyers and all the students that finish photography school each year....so its very hard at first

I agree that it depends on your location. I am also just starting out as a wedding photographer and there are NO other wedding photographers in my county. NONE. So there is not really alot of competition. Plus , I offer a budget package that is practically free so I can get the experience and build a portfolio.

It really depends on what area of photography you are looking at going into. Most of my old photography lecturers weren't keen on domestic photography (portraits and weddings etc) but did it anyways because it was good money, whilst still getting into the more specific area of photography they were into.
Its the same story for me at the moment - working part time as a freelance wedding photographer while finishing my studies, before I chase the more competitive industries. It beats flipping burgers!

To make a good living you have to establish yourself first which generally takes time...look at the names of the famous like Art Wolfe, they all have white hair :-)
So perhaps a job as a photo journalist will pay the bills while you make that name. Some news sites let you be creative take a look at the link below - all the photo journalists at TNT have their own gallery.

Not only is it a competitive field, it is physically demanding. Carrying equipment, moving things around, setting things up can wear you down!
