I have the opportunity to move to Austin for him to go to a school for blind children but I feel as if this might hinder him from "real" life. He has a school set up already and it is a great school but they bunch children with all disabilities together: downs syndrome, deaf, blind etc. they dont have specific classrooms set apart. Should I send him to a public school look for another public school or look more into a specialized school catered to his needs? He is only 6 months old so the move will be in 2 years when he starts school.

Only you can answer this question because only you know your child's abilities and disabilities. As a Mother, you will do what is best for him, from one Mother to another, I know you will. God Bless.

If it were up to me i would first start him in a school that gives all there effort to his specific disability. This is would help him learn how to work around his problem. And as he gets older he can make his own choice of going to a regular school. Children these days are cruel and by him being 'different' they may taunt or upset him. He should be placed at a school where he feels safe and normal. I wouldnt just put him out into the world like that. All in all its up to you. But a school for the blind would be a great decision.

I would send him to the blind school. At public school, they are just going to lump all the "special education" students together...and frankly they spend most of their time just babysitting these kids, not really teaching them. At a school for the blind, he will learn the special skills he needs from people who specialize in his disability. He can always learn socialization with "normal" kids through cub scouts or some other afterschool activities, maybe a musical instrument?

If he was my child, I would let him go to a school for the blind. I tutored at a school for the blind where most of the children were normal except for not being able to see. They were so great and had each other to talk to to talk about the difficulties they faced that seeing people couldn't understand. It was an amazing school. One boy who helped tutor who was also blind, went to a regular high school and took a bus to come to the blind school to tutor. He did everything on his own and said he wished he could have gone to a school like this when he was little.

In my opinion I would send him to a school for the blind. There they will teach him to live and survive in the real world, and he will be with professionals that do this for a living. They have taught many children with this handicap and your child is not the first. In a school for the blind it is a proven school, so I would want to give my child the best education possible, and not risk it on some unproven school that wants to pratice on my child. Just my take.

You should have him go to a regular public school, with a tutor for his special need. The schools for children with disabilities bunch up other children with other special needs together, and he may not have that particular problem. He would do best and feel the most normal in a public school.

get him involved somewhere now, and if he will only be 2 or 3 at time of real schooling, take him to the blind school, they are more equipped for him, and he will advance. then later if you want to, try public.
