you grow your personality from your surroundings (parents)-the quote means the 'apple' is a product of the tree (you are the product of your parents) and 'not falling far away from the tree' means growing and discovering who you really are and that your parents have affected your growth

This is a very common quote. It is actually "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" It is refrencing parents and children. It isn't neccessarily saying that they are exactly the same. It says that they may carry some similar characteristics. But just like any other quote, you can look at it any way you wish. It usually is used in the context of when someone does something that portrays their parent behavior. For instance if someone had a love for swimming, and their child ended up learning to swim at a young age, or competing, it would be right to use this quote.
hope this helps :]

Yes thats exactly what this quote means.
The quote "The apples don't fall far away from the tree", means that the fruit of a tree would have some characteristics of the plant. Anything that is orginated or born of something would have the characteristics of the source it comes from.
So when we say that the personalities of the children and the parents will be the same it means that the children would have traits of the parents personality, behaviour etc in them.
But this only in the case of boilogical parents

Yes it does sound like a valid analysis.
Not only do you share your genes with your parents, as an apple tree and all the apples would, but you also grow up in the same environment (the same orchard). It is one reason why child abusers tend to raise children who turn into child abusers for their own children.
When you are in the same environment, of the same family line and have so much else in common you tend to be so much like your parents. This is why so many parents have the dream to do better for their children then their own parents did for them. It is one reason why society advances, people strive to do better for their children and for themselves.
According to Wikiqoute: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Croatian_proverbs
It is a Croatian proverb of unknown origin, but it is probably far older than the Croatian civilization, maybe even Babylon or older than that.
"Jabuka ne pada daleko od stabla.
Translation: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree."

Yep! I do agree... this means than the offspring's personality, interest, goals etc may be derived from the parents'...to further explain how that happen, other than the genes, the parents are the first social group which the child belong...this may change a bit when they grow up but basic mjotives are develop and influenced by the parents...

Well, you could think of it sociologically as the Indirect Inheretance theory which basically says that you will be similar to your parents in the sense of your income, your religion, your likes/dislikes, and your overall out look on life. It is primarily because when you are growing up, your parents are typically your primary socialization instruments.

It means that The Cat is having Chicken for Dinner tonight, no doubt about it. The Cat will be steadfast in his pursuit of that darn bird and make that statement true. That's what it means! Darn bird, The Cat needs his beauty sleep! I'll show that cock!

It doesn't exactly mean that the parents and kids are going to be alike. You usually say it when you see a child who is very much like one of the parents and that is when you say it.
