That's 62 years ago. A lot have passed on to Fiddler's Green. For a long time there was a merchant seaman's home called Snug Harbor in Staten Island, NY. In 1976 it was moved to Sea Level, North Carolina. Now I understand it is an assisted living center for the general public. My father passed away in Sea Level in 1978. He spent time in the merchant service from 1912 to 1960, serving in both World Wars and Korea. He also made the transition from sail through coal to oil to a last trip in SS. Savannah. She was the only nuclear powered merchant ship.
