83 db/w/m refers to the Sound pressure level of the speakers .

It has nothing to do with Bass (which is a function of the subwoofer), but those speakers will be pretty loud!!

I think, in terms of quality the gx555 should be as good or better as the gx450.
For example, the 555 is rated as 460W total while the 450 is rated 400 W total.

db (decibel) is only important if you knew what it referred to on the old unit. If you want bass and volume than you want to get a system with the most wattage and largest woofers available. The shelf systems that your looking at may even be available with a sub-woofer. This is a very basic explanation in a situation that has too many variables to list here. But in a nutshell, wattage plus woofers equals bass. Go to the nearest walmart or best buy and listen for yourself, there's a lot of selection in shelf systems out there.

your dad stole the 89 db one which is the better stereo because it can go louder.

hunt him down and get it back since it will play better than the gx555.

The higher the db the better the quality and low distortion
