get a book and start reading it backwards word by word. do not try to make any sence from the words. You will be asleep before the end of the second page.

Try taking a hot shower and drink a glass of warm milk and put on some very soothing music turned down just loud enough to hear, to fall asleep by. Try not to think about anything but the music that is playing. Close your eyes and imagine yourself being in a really calm soothing place. Maybe a beach with waves rolling up onto the shore. Everyone has a different idea of what a soothing place is. Your place might be somewhere different. Good Luck!

Don't know if you've had caffeine, Mtn Dew, coke, whatever; if so, you're going to have to wait a while. Get out of bed, read, stretch.
When you get back in to bed, lay down on your back, maybe put a pillow under your legs. Take in a deep breath and hold it for 3 seconds then let it all out, counting to 5. Repeat this 3 times. Then, put your left hand on your chest and your right on your belly. Breathe in slowly in such a way that your belly rises and not your chest. It doesn't have to be deep breaths, just normal ones. As you exhale, think to your self "relax, relax." Do that 10 times. If you're still unable to sleep, repeat the whole thing. Oh, and turn your clock away from you so you're not always looking at how late it is.

Very good question.... I was up for over a week sleeping only 3 to 4 hours a day.... I do have mental health issues, and do take a sleep aid, but that didn't work.... I was still away all the time... so one night... to try and relax and unwind... I went to Wal-mart and walked around for over an hour and half. I wish I knew what to tell you... but I have been there, and done that... but 1:30 isn't nothing.... when you are going on to the 4 o'clock hour with out getting to bed... yea.... anyway.... maybe tonight is going to be rought, but I say call your doc in the morning

First of all, you've got to calm down. The angrier you get about not sleeping, the worse it will be for you.

Do not lie in bed awake for more than 10 minutes. If you still aren't asleep, get up and read the refrigerator manual or something equally as boring. I'm serious. Do not watch TV, as that tends to be too stimulating. Once you feel tired, return to bed. Again, if you're not asleep within ten minutes, get up and restart the whole process.

You might try a warm shower or some warm milk. Heated milk releases trytophan. That's the same "sleepy drug" contained in turkey.

Good luck and sweet dreams!

First get a hot shower. Then, make you a cup of decaf tea, hot chocolate or decaf coffee (if it's cold where you are). Next, get a couple of pillows and a good book and curl up in bed and read until you get sleepy.

If you don't have any good books, go check one out tomorrow. It works for me every time.

Also, when you lay down, clear your head and try not to think about anything to do with work/school/finances or anything stressful. I know that's easier said than done but it will keep you up longer. Also be sure you don't have unnecessary distractions like TV, radio, lights.

RELAX!!
Tense and relax your muscles sequentially. Now let the relaxed feeling spread through out your body. (this might sound weird but it's effective)
If your tense/stressed, is there a particular part of you that tightens? tummy, shoulders, toes, jaw? If so, concentrate the tense/relax sequence there. If your still awake after 20 mins GET UP and do something else for a while.

A glass of hot/warm milk before bed is supposed to help and it seems to work for me.

If your really stuck there are psychologists that specialise in sleep problems.

drugs are a good way to get to sleep but they're only a temporary solution, the best way is to relax and build a routine. i know its easier said then done especially when u have a big day ahead but think of it this way, ur already awake at this hour, stressing about being awake will only keep you up longer. so chill out, turn the clock around, switch on a tv show and forget about tomorrow and its problems. if you truely believe your just relaxing and you need sleep it will come easy

the cheater's way out is to take benadryl. It's an over-the counter allergy medicine, the generic brand often costs only a dollar. Most dollar stores carry it. It's an antihistamine to block allergic response to seasonal allergies, to make your nose stop running. But a major side effect is, it makes you DROWSY like nothing else. When I take benadryl, I'm dead to the world.

The problem is, you develop a tolerance over time. People with depression who rely on meds to sleep, they can take a full dose of benadryl and only sleep for maybe an hour or two from it. Whereas, for me, a HALF dose of benadryl will knock me out for twelve hours.

So, save it for true emergencies. If you rely on it, it will stop working.

Stay away from caffein. I think it is strange that I am hearing more and more people having this problem including myself since Star Bucks and things like Red Bull have bin become so popular. Ween your self off of energy drinks, coffee drinks and soda pop a few hours before you want to sleep. It helps.
