Somewhat depressing, but makes you think a lot about life and society.

You could try reading the book called " Of Mice and Men." It's by John Steinbeck and it's really sad, but to me its a classic.

I grew up in the Salinas valley where most of his stories take place, so I am pretty fond of his work that I have read. I would recommend Of Mice of Men.

You could also try Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row - a couple of his lighter works about scallywags in Monterey.
