The hypotenuse is always the longest side; it is opposite the right angle. The shortest side of any triangle is opposite the smallest angle.

the longest side is the hypotenuse, the hypotenuse is opposite the largest angle, the smallest side is opposite the smallest angle that leaves the third side to be opposite the third angle
