Great question. Makes me smile just to think about it. Van Gough had trouble giving his paintings away. He hung out with great artists and they kept telling him to change. He didn't. He stayed true to his visions.

Art is a way we communicate our feelings. Think of how your favorite song makes you feel. Then think about how you feel with the boy you like talks to you. Or when your parents ground you for something you think is stupid. When you paint think about those emotions and try to capture them.

Emotional response is exactly what art is suppose to elicit. So your cuz thinks your art stinks -- one out of 7 billion isn't really a truly representative sample. Ask your art teacher or a person who you think is a good art for assistance and opinion. But trust in yourself.

Art allows us to be ourselves. Even if no one loves it. It's a part of who we are. Me? I write bad love poems for myself. But for others I am an artist. I perform on the stage in musicals and straight productions. Most people think I'm a good actor. My performances make them feel emotions.

KEEP PAINTING! And when you are famous remember me. LOL

Hi. You might want to listen to what I tell you because it is worth listening to.....

In 1997 I had a gallery cancel my exhibition at the last minute because they decided my work was crap and they didn't want it there. I was really cut.

A few weeks later I was offered a solo exhibition in Paris, where my work was to be displayed with that of Salvador Dali. And yes, I did do it, I ended up with a successful career, an Australia Day Award for achievements in the arts, television and newspaper interviews etc. etc.

Why am I telling you this ???? So you can see that the opinions of others matter little if you truly love what you are doing.

Paint your heart out girl, and have fun. If you love it, success will come. Ignore anyone who knocks you, because I for one can't help but believe in someone who paints because they love it.

Just as not everyone appreciates the same music or movies or books, not everyone is going to appreciate the same art. A good reply to cuz would be something along the lines of "I'm sorry my art doesn't speak to you, but that doesn't mean its stupid. It doesn't have to understand you. You have to understand it." If your art is important to you, you will keep painting. No one will be able to stop you & no one will have to encourage you. You will have something you must say & you will only be able to say it through your art. That is when you will know that you are an artist & not just a painter.

If you are that into art, you will need to develope a thicker skin because all people are not going to like your paintings. Don't worry about what your cuz thinks.

I don't think any kind or form of art is stupid. In fact, art is what keeps our souls healthy. Honestly, when it comes to what your heart wants, no one else matters. All people have opinions, and no opinion is right or wrong. I say, keep painting!

In spite of the level of your talent to express yourself through visual arts, your cousin is obviously a mean and hurtful person who perhaps feels inadequate or worthless in a number of ways, and probably is. I wouldn't take it too personal, but at the same time you should be careful about who you show your work to. There are too many phillistines out there, that you only subject yourself to the scrutiny of the numbskulls when you allow your heart to be exposed that way without gaurding against that sort of criticism.

And if your cuz thinks your clothes look stupid you won't wear them anymore? And if cuz thinks your hairstyle looks dumb you'll change your salon?
Who gives a hoot about what your cuz thinks?
You love art! You love painting!
Now it's time to love "You".

next time you see your "cuz" hit him or her very very hard. Then go and paint something and enjoy it very much. To hell with what other people think of your art, it's yours, do what you want, paint what you want.

Okay... roll your eyes and tell them that they just don't get it, it's art. even art for arts sake means just that. usually people insult what insults them, so you may have made this person feel inadequately talented or perhaps kinda dumb for not understanding it immediately. you could challenge this person to take a minute and tell you what the art means to them. just keep creating and avoid getting caught up in the anxiety of meaningfullness. just keep creating for yourself. when you have something to say, you'll say it. enjoy.
