I have tried medicine from the vets-costly and did not work more than a couple of weeks. There is no sign of fleas which I was told causes these type of worms. Suggestions?

Whenever I have no worm pills available, I use one of these methods.

1. Pick a large handful (or more) of grass that is more than about 8 inches long. Mix it with a can of dog food or raw hamburger. Make sure that the grass is coated in the food.
Feed it to your dog like that.
How it works: The hungry worms go straight for the food and get tangled/caught in the grass. The more the more they try to escape, the more tangled they get. The come out with the grass when the dog poops it out.

2. Feed the dog grease (from cooked bacon, duck, goose, etc), and/or lard.
How it works: The grease makes the dog's stomach and intestines greasy, which causes it to be very slippery for the worms. The worms have nothing to hold on to and come out in the poop. The dog may have greasy-watery poop, but the worms will be gone.

Good Luck

Dogs can also catch tapeworms from sniffing around other dog's poo, or eating things like mice/rats/birds. They can also be born with them if their mothers were not properly wormed.

Stick with the flea treatment from the vets. The likelihood is you have an infestation in your home, and that's why the stuf didn't appear to work for the full month -get a proper housespray from the vets too.

Also get a proper wormer from a vets. Puppies need to be wormed every 2 weeks until they are 3 months old, then monthly until 6 months old and 3 monthly thereafter.

Do NOT use ANYTHING from a pet store - very dangerous and useless stuff, especially for a pup.

EDIT: Hang on a minute - you said the medicine from the vet didn't work, but there is no sign of fleas? Do you mean worm medicine? In which case see above - worm every 2 weeks until 3 months old etc.

i was told the same thing. (and my dogs didnt have fleas as far as i know). the vet said that if the dog licks himself and swallows an INFECTED flea, that the dog can get tape worm. there are differant types of worms, amke sure that you are sure you know which one your dog has. if it doesnt get treated your dog could get Enema. get a test done again, to see that your dog doesnt have them anymore! if it still has them, then i guess you should confront the vet and tell them that the meds didnt help.

i know one way you can tell if your dog has worms, is if the dog has loose stool. (loose stool doesnt ALWAYS mean that there is worms, it could be many other things, but ive found with my dog, it was worms).

sorry i couldnt help much, i would just suggest again...go back to the vet, and let them know. if not try a differant vet, and tell them what went on. and try a new med.

You need to go back to your vet and get the proper medicine and give it to your dog until the tapeworm is gone.
There are also monthly preventatives you give your dog - some prevent many types of worms.

This is not an issue to be cheap about, it really is not that expensive to give worm preventatives and it can mean the difference between a healthy dog and a very sick one.

Get your dog to the vet to be dewormed.

If you have treated them properly and your dog still has tape worm, then there is something in your environment that is causing them to contract tapeworms again. You should get another fecal sample in to the vet to make sure that it's actually tape worm.

Did you repeat the treatment in the time the vet told you to do it again? First treatment kills the live worms, next one the hatched worms from any eggs left.
Did you give all the doses as instructed?
Take a stool sample back to the vet and tell when what is happening.
