Ugh I wish I could remember the website I read an interview with an animator on! Basically what it came down to, is that it was easier to draw the three fingers and the thumb, instead of the whole hand, because a lot of the time it looked "wrong" like the pinky was always stinking out too much to the side, or to get the hand write they would constantly have to redraw the wrist and arm so that the hand was the right size to hold all fingers, while the three finger set up was just easier.
