They told me to take maalox and pepcid until I can see a specialist. Is there anything else I can do to ease the pain. It doesn't feel like it's working. I'm 20 with a 10 month old baby and a very stressful job.

Try Prilosec OTC, along with the Maalox & Pepcid. The Prilosec is actually a better acid blocker than the Pepcid, but takes longer to start working (a few days for full effect), Maalox in only an antacid so provides short-term relief. I am really suprised that the doctor did not prescribe a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), which is the class of medication that Prilosec belongs to, in the first place, since that is what is used most often for ulcers. (Of course, you may also eventually need an prescription antibiotic as well, because sometimes ulcers are caused by the presence of bacteria that damage the wall of the stomach.) I don't really know why the doctor wants you to wait for the specilist to start the treatment. But hopefully he/she knows best. Anyway, my other suggestions would be to avoid anything that might aggrevate the ulcer: spicy foods, caffeine/coffee, & any products containing aspirin or medicines called NSAIDS (e.g. ibuprofen or naproxen). Good luck!

All of the non-prescription pain killers make ulcers worse, so thats not an option. One thing you can try is yogurt or brewers yeast. Ulcers are usually caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which can be inhibited by the microbes in yogurt.

You may want to try some over the counter Prilosec.
