I take it seriously when someone tells me I am evil, or immoral, or lost, or a failure, or that my children are suffering simply because I am an atheist.
But that's life. Some people will say cruel things. It may be hurtful, but the only choice is to suck it up.
However, disagreeing with religion is neither cruel nor disrespectful. Religion, with its wild claims that completely go against reality opens itself up to criticism and debate.
Of course there is a disrespectful way of going about it, such as insulting the person directly. But insulting the religion? Insulting a non-existent being? Seriously, people just need to grow a thicker skin.
edit: as to kerri b's answer, about cruel coments concerning a miscarriage.. I wonder if she is aware of the time that a man posted on here that he'd lost his child because of cancer and that he was now angry with God.. and along comes a woman who's answer said that his child was better off dead rather than to be left with such a horrible father. It wasn't an atheist that posted such filth; it goes both ways. Anyone who doesn't see that needs to pull their head from where the sun doesn't shine.

Why do religious persons disrespect atheists, even those are courteous, polite and never bother anyone? Atheists are the most hated minority in America, if my memory serves me correctly. They are denounced as fools, unpatriotic, and arrogant. Why is that? There is no great kindness bestowed upon atheists by anyone in any religious community, so why should a group that is supposedly without morals (another false accusation) do any better? It is no disrespectful for an atheist to try to show religion as wrong any more than is wrong for a believer to try to show atheism as wrong. It's all opinions in a free world of opinion.

Disagree and disrespect have different meanings. Just because atheists disagree with religion and aren't afraid to tell you so doesn't mean they are being disrespectful. I agree that there are plenty who are disrespectful, but there are many more who are not. I've encountered more religious people who are disrespectful of atheists than vice-versa.

NO! You are not right. Provide one example.
I as many psychologist, psychiatrist believe religion to be a mental sickness and those who believe in any religion to be mentally sick. Those here at R&S provides me with a great deal of proof that it is a mental sickness and they are mentally sick. Stupidity is a mental sickness as a member of the Catholic clergy and psychologist once told me. Most of what you religionist write is stupid such as.
"Absolutely. their belief has flaws also: when they say there is no god. they are claiming themselves to BE god."
That is stupid! Atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods. The jump to the conclusion that we then belive we are gods is stupid.
So if you religionist stop making such stupid, ignorant, idiotic statements you might do better. I don't believe you can because of your mental sickness.

Why do Christians try to force their religion down other people's throats?
[edit:] Times in history where people's religions have been bash by other people with religion;
1. Holocaust
2. Crusades
3. Today in the Middle East
Atheists aren't the problem.

I know quite a few religious atheists. I'm not sure where you get the idea that all atheists are anti-religion.
Nor do most of the atheists I know bash ANY religion.
I know lots of Christians who have bashed my religion. I know lots of Christians who bash atheism.
Not all on both sides behave this way. When they do, the usual reason is ignorance.

It is because we are online, most people on this board like to insult people because they are hiding behind their computers. Most atheists don't really care about religion, they just go about their lives. But once you get online, people decide that manners and respect should go out the window. It is not just true for atheists but for people of all religions. They think that they can insult people's beliefs because they are online.

no one is required to respect your religious theology and doctrines. they are yours, you respect them. we respect your right to worship as you chose to worship, which does not mean we live like you do because you believe a certain way. the little voices in your head are yours. you believe that crap, then you follow the little voices. i however do not believe in that crap and do not hear your voices nor see your visions. according to your faith you believe a girl was given a magic fruit by a talking snake which resulted in your god having an existential meltdown and cursed all of creation over it, then, god got a girl pregnant with himself as his own son, to sacrifice himself to himself in order to protect us from himself. this is the base of your religion, not mine. and your insulted that the rest of us don't share your belief in the absurd? it's not the stupidity of the religion we have a disapproval of but how YOU treat those who do not believe as you do. YOU harass and intimidate with hateful accusations concerning lifestyles or other religions many of you do not know anything about. many christians become horrified at the sight of a woman breast feeding her baby in public and have her arrested ... you influence politicians to pass laws that kiss your bums instead of telling you flakes to take a hike, because of money and votes. yet, you insist your actions are what god says you are to say and do so that you don't take direct actions for yourself. god told you to do it. well, i can't buy your BS anymore than the story of the talking snake.

it's not bashing peoples religions, it's teaching them facts.
and why do you feel the need to put all atheists into one group?
this question is totally bogus, because the same could be said about every religion. there will always be people disrepsecting someone elses beliefs.

(1) This isn't a message board.
(2) If telling the truth is bashing, then call me a basher.
(3) I won't coddle you. If you ask a question, I'll tell you the truth, even if it's something you don't want to hear.
