Why do guys always assume that I have a boyfriend or I'm married.?

I'm single and when I go out guys will say "I know your boyfriend and/or husband is taking care of you." It happens so much I don't even bother to comment because when I do they don't believe me anyway. I don't wear a lot of jewelry or a lot of makeup. It's fustrating because I would like someone in my life at this point.
