I've had cats all my life, and I've noticed that a lot of them like to lay on papers. Usually my school books, notes, or homework I have spread out in front of me. Also, newspapers and magazines. Anytime I spread out a newspaper to read, my cat lays right in the middle.

And one of my cats seems to get high off the smell of newsprint or something, because he'll go totally crazy when he gets around newspaper, trying to burrow under it, running across it and sliding across the room, wrestling it and tearing it--it literally makes him act crazy. You leave him in a room with a newspaper for five minutes, and you'll find it spread ALL over the room by the time you return.

So... Why do cats like to lay on homework?
And... Does newspaper make anyone else's cat go INSANE?

they like to lay on anything that takes your attention off of them...it's like this subtle hint, to remind you of who is in charge and who needs to be attended to...

as for the newspapers? they love the crinkly sound. cats also love it when you bring lots of groceries in, so that they can jump in and out of the bags and play hide and seek... here's a trick, if you use one of those paper shredders that makes everything into strips, dump a full bin out on the floor and watch your cats go nuts...of course, you get to clean it all up after they are done playing...

The cat most likely is laying on your homework, because that's where your attention is focused, and the cat wants your attention. Yeah, all cats do that kind of thing. If you're playing a game, they want to lay on the game board, etc. Cats tend also to like to lay on anything in that size range, like you said books, newspapers, etc., and I've seen them on gameboards, a tub mat on the floor, etc. It could be that somewhere in their brain there is an instinct associated with bedding down in the wild on a pallet of grass, or leaves, etc., and maybe they are drawn to sit on it by instinct. I know that dogs in the wild will trample down grass to make a soft bed. I think your cat's playing with the newspapers because it's fun to chase after them as they float and slide around--your cat is just exercising its hunting skills. How fun to watch!

Well I have a cat that likes newspapers and even eats them but only the edges. I think that the smell is the reason or something. Maybe they like the material on their skin like newspapers. But when my cat eats them I just try to keep it away from her but if she is just in the middle of it I think its ok.

I think the cat is trying to tell you to stop reading and pay attention to him.

I've always had cats, too. My cats always jump on my lap when I'm reading, and makes sure to get between me and my book! It's funny, actually.

Your cat sounds like he loves to play, and paper makes a good playmate. Mine likes to bat things off the table. It doesn't matter what it is, but he'll just start moving the object a little bit, then a bit more, and then give it a big whap, and it slides off onto the floor. Once it's on the floor, he starts batting it again.

Cats lie on your homework (or your newspaper) because they sense that you are giving attention to your homework which should be given to the cat.

My family had a Siamese cat named Ralph (that's a verb) who would chase crumpled paper down the stairs. I believe it is because the rustling of the paper sounded like some interesting form of wild game, but maybe not.

the smell of the ink may well have an effect much like catnip
but mostly it's a game to them and want attention
like little children cats enjoy simple things to play with
the more expensive the toy the less they interested in it

Yeah my cats do this too. It means that they want some love or attention! My cat Buddy sprawls right out on any paper.
He goes insane if you touch his tummy when he is on there he starts kicking your hand with his back feet. It's so funny.
But this is all because they want some attention from you! That means they love you!
Hope this helps!

yeah my cats always lay on my books and papers too. I always thought it was just because it smells like a tree and cats like trees when there outside too. they always rub on them to mark it and stuff and maybe its an instinct thing.

Sounds like you just have happy cats! Cats like new things, and every time you put something new out (for instance clean cat beds) they will go there first...

They love paper... it crunches and fights back!

Sounds like you have happy and well adjusted cats! Congrats!
