When I stole money from my mother so I could buy some pain pills from a friend. I've never been so ashamed. I stopped about a week later. Clean, 6 years.

I've been in recovery since September 12, 1980 and like all other recovering people, that's when I hit MY bottom. People don't get into recovery because they want too, they do it because they have too for one reason or another. Some because of health, financial, legal or family/social problems, they figure out that every time they use they have some kind of these problems. Mine was legal and health. I also don't know any alcoholics or addicts that wouldn't continue to use if they didn't suffer all of the negative consequences.

never, i was one of the fortunate few. i didn't drink often, or a lot, i just couldn't stop completely. i checked out AA meetings, and realized, i am an alcoholic. after years of hearing the life stories of some of the other alcoholics i sponsor, i realize how lucky i was, to get out, before hitting bottom.

I'm not a recovering alcoholic. I think I am teetering over the edge into alcoholism, though. I know this because I only enjoy things if I am drinking.

When I woke up in the admit ward of a funny farm, with some felony charges hanging over my head, diagnosed as suicidal and homicidal. Five years later, I became an RN and began to help other guys to clean up their act.

when i almost lost my job and i was broke and i most importantly i was in danger of loosing my child and didn't even realize it. once i was squatting over a toilet that was too nasty to sit on in a house that didn't have real furniture and a roach crawled across the toe of my $300 boots. we had been waiting for hours on dope to come through. i knew at that moment that i was at the bottom but it still took me a little while to crawl back up...i had started to HATE the way they made me feel

I did not get struck sober at my first meeting. It took three suicide attempts in the three days before I came into my last first AA meeting to get my attention. The last time I introduced myself as a newcomer, nobody clapped. I will celebrate 23 tears of borrowed time next Monday.
