I'd guess you're going to be in Great Lakes for Christmas... right? I'd call the Recruit Training Center and ask them. Tel them your mother wants to know how many places to set for Christmas dinner... ;-)
I know that sounds trite, but that's the kind of thing that can sometimes get people to go to a little more effort to help you.
Be prepared for bad news... that you may not be able to get off base. If that's the case, ask if, since your family lives close, might they be allowed on base.
Again, be prepared for bad news. You might be stuck eating a Christmas dinner with your shipmates. I don't know about boot camp... but aboard ship it was pretty good...and you were allowed all you could eat... as long as you ate everything you took... but that was aboard a carrier.

I am not an expert on this by a long shot, but my boyfriend leaves tomorrow for basic. What I have been told is this - if you have been there long enough, on Thanksgiving and Christmas sometimes local families will "adopt" a sailor for a few hours. With the time you are leaving you definitely will not get Thanksgiving, but Christmas might be a possibility - I don't really know how it works. My boyfriend is getting "adopted" by his uncle for a few hours on Christmas, so I know it happens. You won't be able to go home though, sorry. Hope this helps, and good luck!

If you happen to be at Boot Camp over the major Holidays this could happen. Our daughter was at Boot Camp on Thanksgiving 1998 and a retire Navy couple picked her a two others to provide a dinner in their home. Great alcohol free dinner and they got the kids back on time. Don't know if that program is still applies.......

More than likely not. When you graduate bootcamp you have restricted liberty. You will probably start your A schooling right away, probably right there at Great Lakes, I am sure your family can come to visit you, but you won't be able to spend the night in a hotel or anything because of your restricted liberty. Merry Christmas, God Bless!

I was at Great Lakes two years ago for boot camp. I was there during Christmas. You will not be able to go home. You will likely get to make a phone call and not do any real training on Christmas but that is about it.

Not sure how the navy works, but I was in Air Force Basic Training over Christmass, and all we got was not being hastled so bad that day. We also got to use the phone for 3 minutes, but that was it. I could not get ahold of anyone.

Nope.. you don't get to go home. I've already researched. I'm DEP RCO for my recruiting station and I know a couple kids who were wondering about it. You may be allowed a phone call, like everyone said but I believe it's kind of like a "day of rest." You may not have any PT that day, depending on your division.. too.

My son was in bootcamp over the holidays, but it wasn't Navy. They let all the recruits go home for a week, with strict DO's and DO NOT's. They were drug tested upon arrival. One guy took cough syrup because he had a cold. His Drug urine tested positive for whatever is in cough syrup and he was dischargd.
If they do let you go home, follow orders and keep yourself out of any kind of situations that may lead to problems for you.
They added a week to the end of the 8 weeks. But ask your recruiter. I bet they've had this question before.

Time off, probably not. You might get a pass for a day to Chicago after a couple weeks of training but that's it.
