No, they shouldn't be... unless they're from China and have some type of noxious coating (just kidding).

Stainless pots/pans generally are not harmful. However if abrasives are used in cleaning, trace amounts of nickel can get into the food but they are very low levels and not very likely. Look for stainless pots/pans with an ecapsulated aluminum bottom (aluminum sandwiched by stainless steel plates). The aluminum because it is encapsulated does not contaminate the food but is more efficient in evenly heating the food. Look for a heavy gauge such as 18 gauge for best quality. Avoid cheaper thin pots as they do not last. Avoid pots with plastic handles and look for pots with stainless handles that are riveted for extra durability and safety.

No Stainless still is not harmful. The only one that may be harmful to your health (debatable to some) are the non-stick pots and pans. There have been some studies that show at high temperatures the coating may "melt" and some of the chemicals may get into the food.

I think stainless steel pots can be harmful to your health because my daughter's dentist put some of those stainless steel caps on her teeth and a couple weeks later she started having seizures all the time and her gums were swollen and purple for almost a year after he put them on. We decided to have a dentist remove the caps and shortly after that she stopped having seizures and hasn't had any since. I know that metal poisoning can cause seizures and it seems like it could have been the culprit in my daughter's case. Also my grandmother died from Alzheimer's and the doctor said they found traces of aluminum in her brain. My grandma always cooked with aluminum pans. I saw a scientific study that showed heavy metal that goes through the blood brain barrier and attaches to the nerves is so heavy that it causes the nerves to get tangled up and malfunction.

Personally, I think investing in the more expensive pots may be a good investment. I like the idea of the new non-stick ceramic coated pots. I know they are more expensive.

Stainless steel is your best option really.. Avoid cheap aluminum pans, since aluminum is toxic and has even been linked to Alzheimer's. High quality pans generally have aluminum sandwiched by stainless steel, so you are not exposed to the aluminum. My preferred brand is LTD, but they are quite pricey. Remember, when it comes to cookware, high quality pots and pans will last a lifetime, so it is worth the upfront investment.
