It's probably because you bought the 40GB PS3. The 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.
If you wanted a PS3 that is backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games you needed to get the 20GB, 60GB or 80GB PS3. The 20GB and 60GB PS3 has the best backward compatibility because it has the Emotion Engine inside of it and the 80GB PS3 has the second best backward compatibility because it uses software emulation to be backward compatible.
Also, it would be impossible to find a 20GB PS3 in stores because they have been discontinued for several months, and the 60GB PS3 has been discontinued for just a few months now, but eventually all of the 60GB PS3's will be sold out and the only PS3 left with backward compatibility is the 80GB version.

I had teh same issue, I bought mine friday, and the only reason I bought the PS3 instead of the Xbox 360 or teh Wii was because I didn't want to ignore my ps2 games. but even though the official site says you can play ps2 games, the manual says ni black and white teh the PS3 does not support PS2 games, but that it does instead support ps1 gaems. You can transfer saved files for a ps2 to the ps3, but it's pointless because you can't play the games on it. I am seriously considering returning my ps3 and getting a 350 instead. If I have to get a new system and it's not compatible with my avorite games, I might as well go to a completely different system.

The previous 80 gb (now $4 hundred, comparable as xbox elite) can play ps1 and ps2 video games, however the recent a hundred and twenty gig style is actual a 40 gig with an improve, because it lacks all the advantageous factors the 40 gig additionally lacked. meaning no ps2 video games (yet you will play ps1 video games) no memory card readers, 2 USB ports, and so on.

The 40 gig plays ps1 games but doesn't play ps2 games only the 60gig and 80gig play ps2 games. If you have the 80 gig , you'll have to update the ps3 first. If you have the 60gig US version then it should work right out of the box.
