Westerners only see what their media presents to them.
And Muslims only see what THEIr media presents to them.
Could this be a lack of communication and misrepresentation?

Islam says men and women are equal.
Ever thought why the bible says eve should be opunished with labour pains because she tempted adam to eat the forbidden fruit??

In islam, its an honour to be a mother. Prophet muhammad said :"Paradise lies under the feet of the mother"

He also said that from a child's point of view, 75% of respect and love should be given to the mother and 25% to the father.

Nowehere does it make a distinction. Why blame islam, if there are bad muslims around??

Because that is the appearance that is emitted by their cultural beliefs, traditions etc. some of which have had the influence of religion (pure or manipulated). My family is muslim from Pakistan so I do think that yes women have fewer rights than democratic western nations. But I also think that there are some women who are content with it or have made a conscious choice and if thats the case then fine...but in my view, most havent. They have had a particular view ingrained in them so they think that is the only right way to go etc (this isnt limited to Islam alone).
Additionally, I think you need to distinguish between the religion and the culture...the extremes in Saudi Arabia arent present in Pakistan for example. It is a cultural element. And also religion is manipulated (by males of course) and used to rule in a certain way.
And I think contrary to many western people's views and many feminists, women are far than equal in western countries (just look at their wage earnings and the stereotypes prevalent). But compared to most muslim countries, for myself living in the west is a blessing; there is a reason why as a female I am loathe to visit Pakistan.
I do not mean to offend but this is simply stemming from my experiences in Canada and Pakistan.

Because when there is a crime (and both the man and the woman were involved) the woman is stoned to death and the man is set free. (read that one in the paper about a year ago)

Because women don't have equal rights as men do.

Because women can and have been stoned to death for not wearing the proper attire.

Because in some middle eastern areas, women with professional jobs (professors, doctors, lawyers, etc.) are restricted to their homes.

Because in Bangladesh, a rapist can sometimes marry the woman he has assaulted and avoid prosecution.

Because in Muslim Kashmir, woman who leaves the house with her face uncovered runs the risk of having acid thrown in her face.

Need I say more?

Because they are basing it off the laws and government based of culture not Islam. Many of the laws the other posters are pointing out are not Islamic laws, these were simply made by the government, but since many do not dare to learn for themselves they just assume this is Islamic. While the countries laws may not be fair, Islamic law is equal between men and women.

Because women are second-class citizens in those countries, and I say this based on direct testimony from women who have fled these countries, not on the media.

For testimony:

The Qur'an asks for two men or one man and two women. How is that so, that the testimony of a woman is of only half the value of testimony of one man!?

Why would any sensible parents allow ''muta'ah marriages'" and made put the women at disadvantage? Why is there not similar for men??

Many muslim countries do.
In Saudi Arabia women are not allowed to drive. This is a basic right.
In Iran Women are not "co-owners" of their children. If there would be divorce the man gets the kids.
Can women own property? Can women vote? Can women work at the same wage as their male counter part? Can a women's husband be arrested if he hits her? Is it lawful for man to hit his wife?

These are all basic human rights that many of these countries lack.
