When placing speakers (5.1) around a room, do all the speakers need to be equal distance from the center of the room? For example, can the rear speakers be closer to the center than the front speakers?

Position of speakers is based on the primary sitting point or the "Sweet Spot." The best explanation of where speakers should go in a perfect world is at:

In a word, no. Dont over think it. Keep it simple. You can put the speakers closer if you have to. Ours are right behind the couches where our guests sit and it works just fine.
The main volume will come from the center speaker above your tv anyway.
Good luck!

Yes, and in order to set it up correctly, you should set some latency timings on your reciever. This would, in your case, put a several millisecond delay on your rear speakers in order to allow the sound from the front speakers to reach you in synchronous with the rest of the speakers.

Because of the size of my room, mine are closer to the centre than the front ones. I simply lowered the volume level of the rear speakers to achieve uniform levels all throughout ;)
