Both are necessary ingredients for a good marriage.

I am going to have to say love. Honestly, I believe they walk hand in hand. If I have to make a choice, then I choose love. If your love for the person is strong enough, then it is possible to develop the respect required for the marriage to work. You see it all the time. One or the other cheats. One forgives the other for cheating out of love, but loses a lot of respect for them. Over time, the wounds can be healed and the respect and trust are rebuilt. Love is more important.

That is like asking what is more important, air or breathing?

You can think of respect as the air of the marriage, in that the marriage cannot exist without being in the presence of respect. On the other hand, if either partner in the marriage refuses to inhale (take in the respect of the other) and exhale (equally respect the other), love will not exist in that union. It is by giving, receiving and ultimately accepting one another (respect) that one finds love and happiness in marriage.

Both are very important but I think respect is a little bit more important.

If I do not respect a man I cannot love him.

Both are important to marriage. You really can't have one without the other.... If you love someone you will automatically respect them... isn't the" why" obvious?

I can see how you can respect someone without loving them, but I would call that a convenience not a marriage. I can't see how you can love someone and not respect them. Maybe you can adore them and not respect them?

respect is important because i watch alot of doctor phil and even though people love their spouses they almost always cross the line by hitting them etc but respect stops you from doing those stupid things even though there will always be disagreements. but i guess you can say if you really do feel love in your heart for someone then you would never do anything to harm them orally physically or mentally. so you need both

Respect, for love can go both ways. You love a person so much that you do not see that you hurt them so, or love them so much that you respect them & do their every wish. People are different so it depends but mainly Respect.

Love & respect are so much interlinked you cannot seperate them. Whom you love you respect his feelings / needs. & Whom you respect you start to love whatever he/she does.

You cannot seperate both of them. You need BOTH. And when one of them enters first, you find the other is already there.

Love, since true love involves denying one's self and respecting the other.
