My husbands family lives out of state and we were planning on sending his parents and grandparents homemade cookies in tins for Christmas. Will the cookies stay fresh? How should we package them?

use those ziplock plastics, the retain the crispiness of your cookies and it keeps any foreign objects to go and touch your food... then that is the time you place it in whatever packaging you would want...

If they are a soft kind of cookie, put a piece of bread in the plastic container with them. Make sure you tell the people you are sending them to to toss the bread, but it will keep the cookies really moist.

As long as you send them priority mail and not parcel post, you should be fine. Just tape all the way around the lid to keep odors out, especially if they're Toll House cookies. (Chocolate is notorious for absorbing odors.)

In airtight zipper bags, then in metal tins. Keep those from banging around w/ styro peanuts or unbuttered popcorn.

Also, mail Monday morning. You don't want them sitting around a post office somewhere for a day or longer when they coudl be enjoyed.

I would wrap them in plastic wrap or maybe Glad ware containers, freeze them and mail them Priority mail. The cookies should still have plenty of shelf life when they get there.
