No one is perfect or ever will be Jesus was our example and it is through his blood, his sacrifice that we are made perfect, thereby ready for heaven. All we have to do is accept Him into our hearts.
Many people now read the bible and no where in the bible is a place called purgatory. It seems purgatory was a money making scam. If you paid the priest they could pray your loved one into heaven. Where is the need for that when Jesus made the sacrifice on the cross? There is heaven and there is hell, the decisions we make in this life determine the place where our soul will spend eternity. Quite simple. People make things more complicated. This is why many people could not grasp Jesus' teaching. He wants no one to go to hell so he made a way of escape. Please know that Jesus knows all of our struggles no one is perfect if they tell you so they are a perfect liar. You purge yourself daily, ask God to forgive you for your sins. He is faithful and just to forgive you. Then you will be ready for heaven.

Purgatory isn't scriptural. It is not found anywhere in the Bible. You also don't have to be perfect to enter into Heaven. You do need to work towards it, but even Paul had not reached it yet, Philippians 3:12. The reason for Jesus is to be an advocate to help us when we do sin, 1 John 2:1-2. Purgatory is not Biblical.

I believe in some sort of enlightenment after death, but not necessarily the Roman Catholic view of purgatory---don't get me started on that.
Purgatory is just what it says; purgative. Some writers would like to make it punitive, but our sins have already been paid for.
I can agree with Dante, that we are allowed to do most of our own purgation while still in this life, and that it would be a pretty good idea, but none of us is going to die perfect.
You get a star for an excellent question.

"If we neither give thanks to God in tribulations nor redeem our own sins by good works, we shall have to remain in that purgatorian fire as long as it takes for those above-mentioned lesser sins to be consumed like wood and straw and hay." Ceasar of Arles, Sermon 179 (104):2 (A.D. 542).
"Each one will be presented to the Judge exactly as he was when he departed this life. Yet, there must be a cleansing fire before judgment, because of some minor faults that may remain to be purged away. Does not Christ, the Truth, say that if anyone blasphemes against the Holy Spirit he shall not be forgiven 'either in this world or in the world to come'(Mt. 12:32)? From this statement we learn that some sins can be forgiven in this world and some in the world to come. For, if forgiveness is refused for a particular sin, we conclude logically that it is granted for others. This must apply, as I said, to slight transgressions." Gregory the Great [regn. A.D. 590-604], Dialogues, 4:39 (A.D. 594).

God doesnt say you have to be perfect to get into heaven. He says you have to be righteous. There is no one righteous in this world, and as you have pointed out there is no action that we can take on our own that will make us pure.
That is why God sent His son to die on the cross, to pay for our sins himself and if we believe on Him that he was crucified and rose from the dead and is Lord God, then we shall be saved into Heaven because God counts faith for righteousness. There are multiple accounts of this in the Bible from Abraham in Genesis to the crippled man that Jesus forgave of his sins in the new testament.
If anything, purgatory defined as a place between heaven and hell where imperfect people are....well that's just earth.

Our spirit IS perfect, it's our body that suffers from sin. The Word of God says that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, No inbetween place mentiond there.
When God does a work it is perfect, implying that there is a purgatory would mean that God wasn't complete in his work to pay for sin on the cross and that we have some part in our salvation. His promise is eternal life which is gained by faith in the FINISHED work of Christ on the cross not by any works we do.

Why don't people believe in Purgatory? Well, I can't speak for all people, but for myself, I don't believe in purgatory for the same reasons I don't believe in the tooth fairy, Santa Claus, elves, underpants gnomes, and Jesus. Because there is no evidence to support its existence.
True, the concept of purgatory is certainly a more logical one than "die imperfect, to straight to Hell." But the concept of places where we go after we die - or of surviving our deaths - is totally illogical anyway. It's not even really worth examining.
Why *do* you believe in Purgatory? Have you ever asked yourself that question - and really examined the question, and the answer? Do you have evidence that points to its existence, or the existence of any kind of afterlife in which we are punished or rewarded by a conscious god?

My Bible says that Jesus Christ has already perfected me, through what He accomplished on the cross:
"For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."
Hebrews 10:14
I don't believe in purgatory because it is nowhere to be found in the Bible and contradicts the plain teaching of the New Testament.
It is a doctrine of men.
If suffering torment was what sanctified a person, then the holiest people in the universe ought to be found in hell.

Because it isn't biblical! It is a money making venture brought into existence by men of the church. The church just happened to be the Roman Catholic Church at the time. I don't know if any other denomination would have made this up but then the Catholic church stamped out anyone who went against the papacy.
There is no purgatory, it was designed by men for men. It has nothing to do with God and company.

Because Jesus talked about heaven and Hell, but never mentioned purgatory. The thief on the cross was going with Jesus to paradise, hardly a place of trial and pain where one works off sin.
There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell (Greek Hades), where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him "Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because i am in agony in this fire. But Abraham replied, 'Son remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And Besides all this, BETWEEN US AN YOU A GREAT CHASM HAS BEEN FIXED, SO THAT THOSE WHO WANT TO GO FROM HERE TO YOU CANNOT, NOR CAN ANYONE CROSS OVER FROM THERE TO US. (capital letters for emphasis) Seems that once you die, your fate is sealed. You can not cross over to another place no matter who tries to pray you out.
