Changed her food to lamb & rice, she is still scratching but not as much. Thanks

My first suggestion is to ask this question under the "pets" category because the people who answer questions there know more about dogs, and sometimes there are even vets there.

I did find an article about itching in dogs that says the following:

"The use of antihistamines can help control itching in a small group of pets. Antihistamines seem to be effective about 10 to 15% of the time in controlling itchiness in pets. While this is a low rate of effectiveness these are over-the-counter products that are readily available and so it is worth trying them for 7 to 10 days to see if they will help. In cats the antihistamine of choice seems to be chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimeton tm, 2mg/cat every 12 hours) and in dogs the two that seem to work the most often in studies are diphenhydramine (Benedryl tm), 1mg/lb of body weight, and clemastine (Tavist tm) 0.02 to .04mg/lb of body weight ."

There is a link below to the entire article.

I would like to suggest something that I suggest to humans who ask about itching. Don't give it orally. It will make him sleepy and it works better if you apply it topically to the itch. Benadryl is not only an antihistamine but a potent local anesthetic, so it is good for itches that are from allergies and also for itches from other sources.

Benadryl is available as an ointment, a spray, and a liquid. Look for the generic name diphenhydramine; it is cheaper.

You can also apply human hydrocortisone ointment.

Neither one of these should do any damage if he licks at them.

I hope this helps.

Yes, I give my cocker 2 pills every 4hr if neede. There is a poundage issue with Benedryl...call the vet and see how much to give your dog. Mine is 39 lbs and we are allowed to give 2 every 4 hrs. You might be over dosing call and find out. Predisone never worked for my dog at all. You might have to get prescription pet food at the vets like my dog...he is allergic to everything else. Bathe him in Dog shampoo made of Oatmeal and let him sit with it on for 5 minutes. Stop all table scraps. And give benedryl every four hrs. By the way you can give adult benedryl, not childrens that was right from my vets mouth and I find the capsules with the little balls inside work better then the hard ones they disolve better...any ? write me.

I give my 26 pound pug half of a 25mg tablet. Reduce the dosge to 1/2 childrens tablet to make sure she gets rid of the itching and does not have a breathing problem from the Benadryl. Advice from my Vet.

Good Luck.

It's ok to give a dog Benadryl. Take into account how big she is. I have a 20 pound bichon frise, so I would give him a children's dose of the Benadryl. And I would also watch him like a hawk to make sure he's ok.

Important information

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Benadryl may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking Benadryl.

Ohhhh that's not such a good idea. Have you tried Canidae food? They claim their food heals up skin conditions very well. Or try some other really high quality food (nothing from grocery, Walmart, Petsmart, etc.).

its fine to give her benadryl, i give it to my dog all the time cause she is allergic to just about every kind of dog food and always gets rashes and such, just watch how much you give her, read the bottle to look for weight limits and such but you should be fine. =)
