I purchased a car a couple days ago from a private seller. I financed the car through Chase Bank. After all the papers were signed they told me that they would mail me my plates in 2-4 weeks, and when I asked for a temporary plate they said they don't do that. Is this normal?

The girl I bought the car from wants me to mail back her plates, but I don't think I can have the car parked on the street without plates.

I live in Illinois and by law I have 20 days to submit the info to register the car, however it is illegal for me to drive it until I do so. Thoughts?

I'm unable to register the car without a title. Since Chase Bank is the lienholder, they hold the title until it's paid off. Like when you finance a new car through a car company (e.g. VW Credit) the dealer provides you the plates. However, Chase can't give me temporary plates like a dealer can.

The bank shouldn't have anything to do with the plates. When you go to DMV to register the car, they give you the plates.

he cant go to dmv to register the car because the bank keeps the title. it probally will get towed if you park it on the street without plates you would have to ask your local police dpt about that. I would wait for the bank to send you your plates and not worry about driving the car until that happens otherwise you will be introuble if you drive it with her old plates on it anyways . Call dmv and ask them if the car has been registered yet by the bank and if they can issue you a temp plate. Also call the bank and check the status of whats going on. Usually it only takes a week tops
