Actually most Veterans would tell you that in combat situations they are more dangerous to the user because the blade may get stuck on ribs or other bones and not able to pull out fast enough to use right away again on another bad guy. At least that is what they told me.
In Rambos case, it is just for show....

There are numerous uses for the serrated blade top. One is for sawing through bone when cleaning big game, although there are many more effective tools now to do this. In the fighting knife it was designed to inflict more damage if inserted into a foe, especially when removing.
These knives as I mentioned were designed for many uses and another this design was to be used for was to shave wood for fire or to saw through wood if need be for shelter or animal traps. None of which it does very effectively either.
Long story short, is that the uses it was designed for are largely done better by other implements, but the mystique of the survival knife and it's design continues forward today still as it was originally made. A gut hook on the back might actually have made more sense in today's knife, but they continue to sell them with the aw blade back so why change it?
Hope that helps a little with the "what" and "why."

The saw teeth on top of the knife are called serrations. They are especially useful in self defense situations as they can tear through the clothing and flesh of an attacker much easier than a knife with a plain-edge.

It makes them look meaner. That is it Rambo made them popular. I would never carry one that is like that. I had a Gerber 8" double edge knife I carried on my LBE in the army. Smooth all the way to the hilt.
Had a relitive that served 2 tours in nam in Marine FR. He always said to sharpen the top of your knife that way you can cut a bigger hole while you pull the knife out.
Plus Mall Ninja's love them that way.

When I got my Randall Model 18 (1970) I ordered it with the saw teeth in the event I needed to cut through panels on helicopters. Several guys in my unit bought them this way. I never had to use it for that, and don't know anyone who did--but that was the recommendation we received from guys who had already been there (Nam) and already done that.

Actually, it is intended to serve two purposes. The first purpose is functional, it is intended to actually saw stuff. You can saw bone if you are dressing out a deer or you can saw wood if you are building a survival fire. You can saw whatever you want that is not harder than the metal the blade is made of. Its second purpose is to look "cool" and make people who are fastinated by "cool" looking stuff buy it.

It can be used to inflict more damage when knife is pulled out. Also it can be used for cutting barb wire or field dressing an animal.
