it upsetting that you can take the cat with you but if you take he/her to the pound it may be about $100 that's how much i spent when i bought my kitten from the pound.

Ugh! I get calls like this at the vet clinic I work at and it makes me incredibly sad. Why can't you find a location that accepts cats? That is always the question I've wanted to ask back, but never could. So I feel a 100% relieved in being able to do it now.
As for your cat, why can't your find a friend or family member that might be able to take the cat (AND WILL KEEP IT!)? Gives your cat a chance at life.

Why not find a home for the cat yourself so it will not have a chance of being euthanized at the pound. Try friends, family, neigbors, coworkers. Put up a flyer at a local pet hospital or pet shop. It costs nothing to give an animal to the pound but they charge to adopt one. If you absolutely cannot place your cat in a new home..at least take him to a "no-kill" shelter.

It costs you nothing - but often times costs the cat its life. It would be great if you could find your cat a good home before dropping it off at the pound. But the pound is better than just dropping it off by the side of the road.

Ask somebody at Petco or Petsmart if there are any cat rescue groups or other rescue groups that accept cats and dogs in your area.
If you have to donate money at all when you give up the cat, that will depend on the individual group or shelter.

It costs the cat it's life and unfortunately it shows what kind of person you are. A cat is a lifetime responsibility and when you got it, you made ity a promise that you you take care of it. You lied when you got that cat.

Try a Petsmart in your area. They usually are associated with cat rescue organizations

unless it is a no kill shelter they will kill it. there are way too many unwanted cats because people just let them breed unchecked. try to find someone to take the cat and only if you have to take it to the shelter because killing it is better then letting breed (if it's not fixed) endlessly. which will cause more unwanted cats to be born who will be killed.
