To be honest, a good portion of them do it because they wish they could be in scouting. My oldest is 17, a senior, and an Eagle Scout. He runs Cross Country and long distance in Track. His sophmore year, during track, there was one of the team members that kept hasseling him about being a Boy Scout, relentlessly. He would come home in tears some times because it was so bad. Then, one day, at a track meet, this kid was still bagging on him. He happened to do it in front of two rather large boys from a different team (they had no idea who my son was). This kid was telling my son that all scouts were pansies and girls. They other two boys walk right up behind him and ask "What did you say about Boy Scouts?". He repeated what he said, thinking he was getting backed by this guys. The biggest one looks at him and says, "I'm an Eagle Scout, he's a Life Scout. Do either of us look like girls or pansies ?" He quickly backed down. At the end of the track season, he actually apologized to my son, and told him that it must be nice to actually belong somewhere that people who don't even know you have your back. So, my vote is for jealousy.

Some kids like Scouts and Scouting, most kids don't really care one way or the other.
Some kids don't like it MOSTLY because they have been taught, in some way, not to. Jokes on TV, comments by friends and family, etc.
Some kids just really don't know much about Scouts and judge them based on the uniform, and a sense that is is somehow 'sissy'.
No matter how good a program is, there are some people who will mock it. Sometimes it is just plain old 'sour grapes'.

Yes, it depends on where you live, the Youth Army Brigade in my country isn't made fun of at all. They do have much better uniforms than american boy scouts though i gotta admit that.
Nice camoflague pattern two part inform without that weird hat would do wonders to reestablish your "boy scouts" as a militant organization.

I suppose it depends on where you live. Where I live, people do NOT pick on boy scouts or girl scouts etc but I do know it happens in some places

They're just jealous, shallow, and obnoxious. Scouts are taught to be loyal and respectful and these morons at your school can't appreciate that. You're taught not to be the average male chauvinist pig, but a person of substance. Hold your head high, they're all beneath you.

Why do people assume they are jealous? I never picked on any one as a kid but I always thought boyscouts was pretty lame and stupid. I just never said anything. Just seems like most 13 year old boys would have funner stuff to do than go camping with creepy "camp masters" in the woods. Maybe it was fun in the 1960's but at least in Southern California it's seen as lame. In fact, I work with kids teaching sports and I've only met one kid who does boyscouts. I've seen a few and they are almost as weird as the spelling bee kids.

I wonder the same thing. I guess cause it's more associated with little kids, and is seen as lame.
