For a 16 year old, it shouldn't be fast at all.
A 10-15 year old pickup truck (preferably with a stick shift) Is a great one for kids just learning to drive.
Much more reliable (and easier to work on) than cars.

Two thousand won't buy anything cool, fast, fun, good, or reliable on four wheels. The Yamaha Trailway 200-B sells
2008 Model at about four thousand dollars. This is a street
legal motorcycle with knobby rubber so it can run amid soft
stuff like desert sand, mountain mud, etc. It is hard but not
impossible to get somebody preggers on the back seat in
transit between Alaska and Mexico.

Get an older car that is common that is not front wheel drive so that they can learn about things under the engine; learn to change the oil, learn to change a flat tire and do some minor maintenance. The car should be a manual transmission, and should not be fast, but should be safe and reliable. It should also be one that is not expensive to insure.

one word Volkswagen! I have had them since i was 15 and they are a blast! you can get a MK3 for pretty cheap if you look around. Go to www.vwvortex.com There are hundreds of VW's for sale there! there reliable to boot! you can get a Diesel and get 55 MPG too boot! My bro has 2 Jetta TDI's and makes bio-diesel. He ends up paying like 5 bucks to fill up his tank. Its crazy simple to do, good fr the enviroment, pays itself back in under a year, and a good activity! If i can make a batch ANYONE CAN!!! oh there easy to work on too. Ive done a few engine swaps in my garage.

You sure don't get much for $2k. Whatever you do, don't buy a crapper and then add bells and whistles that are worth more than the car. Better to buy a better car and forget the junk. For that little money, you'd have to be looking for an early 90s era car.
