Our little lab mix puppy seems to be whining constantly:

- when we put her in the crate (She LOVES her crate and goes in on her own) and leave the room and don't pay attention to her
We know she wants attention when she's in the crate, but we do have places to go and we need to be able to leave her inside for an hour or two. We give her a toy to chew on and stand by the crate for a minute, but when we start to walk away, she starts whining again. IGNORING HER DOESN'T WORK FOR US. She will only start barking, and we had heard enough after five minutes of howling. How can we get her to console herself without us having to stay with her until she falls asleep?

- when we are eating at the table (she eats near us, but when she's finished with her food she'll start whining and getting restless)
We tried bringing her out to go potty, but after she finishes buisness she just runs around. We give her a chew toy when she is finished, but she leaves it and gets back to whining. CONT

We want to let her know we want to finish eating before we can play with her. How do we stop this behavior??

If she's young maybe she misses her mom and her brothers and sisters. Try to make sure she's always in the same room with you so she doesn't feel like your not paying any attention to her.

When you are ready to go out, put her in her crate with a safe toy and leave. Don't say anything, or act like it is a big deal or she will get the idea it must be a big deal and be worse. Ignoring her WILL work, if you let it.
She is using the only type of communication available to her to make her needs known. It is up to you to determine if it is a true need or just an attention getting ploy.
Feed her early enough so that she can go potty before you sit down to eat. Do not feed her from the table or allow her to interrupt your meal. Give her a chewie to play with while you eat
Afterwards, you can take her out to run around and play as a reward for being good.
They say, it isn't the dog who needs training. It's the people.

If you are putting her in her crate at night. Put in the same room as you sleep in. You can also get a ticking alarm clock to set beside the crate. I put my Little Roo in another room and she would cry but since shes in the same room now shes fine.
She is not getting enough attention. She needs you to play with her and spend time with her.

I missed how old she is? If she is near 8 weeks maybe she misses her Mom.
