My cats occasionaly when they drink from the water bowl they take their front left paw and act like they are trying to get a grip on the pavement. but there is no water there so i dont understand this. thanks in advance

one of my cats does that all the time (but with both paws, one on either side of the bowl). we call it "going swimming in the water dish" ! I don't know why they do it, but it's normal.

I'm not sure what you mean. It sounds like a normal behavior.

One of my cats will sometimes put her paw in the water dish and it's because she is testing the depth of the water. She doesn't want to drown. She will also paw at the bed before jumping up.

Each cat is different. They have their own personalities. Some of what they do is of course tied to survival instincts.

Yes, I've seen my cats do it many times. In the wild, a cat will move his paw through the water to clear up any debris on top. It is a natural, wild behavior that has "crossed over" onto domesticated cats. Even if there is no debris, the cat cannot help but use this instinct. Cats are so cool, aren't they?
